An Advent Invitation!
Here in December 2008---with so many in our communities already
experiencing or anticipating a winter of anxiety and loss---we in SACEM, along
with all those networks of faithful communities to which we connect, are invited
into Advent-icipation! We
are invited to celebrate again the reality of God-with-us, Emmanuel, in
all things. During such anxious times, we are reminded that we are called
to journey as hopeful, expectant people of faith. Such hope is beyond wishful
thinking...it is strong expectation of fulfillment in that which matters most.

“Well, Toto, I guess we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
( - Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz)
In the June issue of The Continuing Educator I wrote about the
season of change affecting those involved in continuing education for
ministry. Little did any of us realize the range of changes that would
occur world-wide since June 2008! The last few months have brought a
whole new focus to the idea of change as the deteriorating global
financial realities have rippled through our individual and
organizational lives. Congregations, seminaries, retreat centers,
denominations, and judicatories are scrambling to try to respond to the
changes. Endowments, gifts, enrollments, staffing patterns, planning,
and programs all are affected.

Lifelong Learning:Challenges and Opportunities in a Digital Age
Around the theme of "Lifelong Learning: Challenges and Opportunities in a Digital Age," Dr. Mary Hess of Luther Seminary in Minneapolis stimulated reflection and discussion among participants with her two keynote presentations. In her presentations she shared YouTube videos and other web sites to demonstrate the extensive social networking and digital culture ethos which influences, and even pervades our present educational contexts.

President's Column: Call It What You Want |

In times of change learners inherit the earth
while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped
to deal with a world that no longer exists.
(Eric Hoffer, 1973, p. 32)
Call it what you want: continuing education, spiritual formation, lifelong learning, or non credit learning, the work of those associated with the Society for the Advancement of Continuing Education in Ministry (SACEM) is changing. Older traditional approaches are becoming more problematic and new challenges are emerging. Programs and topics that once generated large enthusiastic audiences are waning. Educational institutions are insisting that the non-credit parts of their programs generate more revenue and control expenses, difficult in the best of times with participants who often have limited incomes.
